BSN Round 24: Capitanes keep a leadership position- June 23, 2022

Ponce - Quebradillas 94-87 There was a minor upset in Juana Diaz where their close opponent Piratas (17-11) were defeated by second ranked Leones (18-13) 94-87 on Monday. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Strangely Piratas outrebounded Leones 42-21 including a 27-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American-South Sudanese Nuni Omot (206-1994, college: Baylor) who had a double-double by scoring 24 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. The former international Michael Rosario (190-1990, college: Florida) chipped in 27 points. At the other side the best for losing team was American Thomas Robinson (208-1991, college: Kansas) who recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and 13 rebounds and the former international point guard Gary Browne (185-1993, college: WVU) added 13 points, 7 rebounds and 11 assists respectively. Five Piratas players scored in double figures. Piratas' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Leones maintains second position with 18-13 record having just one point less than leader Arecibo. Loser Piratas dropped to the third place with 11 games lost. Leones will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Piratas will play against the league's leader Capitanes in Arecibo and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Indios dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Gigantes' 30. They outrebounded Gigantes 41-27 including a 32-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Indios looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. The best player for the winners was naturalized Nicaraguan guard Jared Ruiz (188-1992) who scored 36 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 6 assists. American power forward Kaleb Wesson (208-1999, college: Ohio St.) chipped in 20 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Four Indios players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Sheldon McClellan (196-1992, college: Miami, FL) who recorded 27 points and 4 assists and the former international center George Conditt IV (208-2000, college: Iowa St.) added 10 points and 8 rebounds respectively. Gigantes' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Indios maintains fifth position with 15-15 record. Loser Gigantes keep the fourth place with 17 games lost. Indios will meet at home league's leader Vaqueros in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Gigantes will play against the league's second-placed Cangrejeros in Santurce and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Vaqueros managed to secure only one-point victory 81-80. However their fans expected much easier game. Vaqueros dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Brujos' 32. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. The winners were led by the former international point guard Angel Rodriguez (180-1992, college: Miami, FL) who scored that evening 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists and the former international Javier Mojica (189-1984, college: CCSU) supported him with 16 points and 6 assists. Four Vaqueros players scored in double figures. Even 26 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists by American power forward Ben McCauley (206-1986, college: NC State) did not help to save the game for Brujos. Naturalized American swingman Jahvari Josiah (193-1993, college: Coppin St.) added 25 points and 10 rebounds. Vaqueros maintains first position with 20-8 record. Brujos lost third consecutive game. They keep the sixth place with 20 games lost. They share the position with Humacao. Vaqueros will play against Indios (#5) in Mayaguez in the next round. Brujos will play on the road against Atleticos in San German and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Capitanes defeated 3rd ranked Cariduros in Arecibo 117-101. Capitanes shot 62.0 percent from the field. They shot the lights out from three sinking 25 long-distance shots on high 55.6 percentage. Capitanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Capitanes made 7 blocks. Worth to mention a great performance of naturalized U.S. Virgin Islands point guard Walter Hodge (183-1986, college: Florida) who helped to win the game recording 33 points (!!!) and Dominican Victor Liz (193-1986) who added 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was American Victor Rudd (206-1991, college: S.Florida) with 18 points and 4 assists and his fellow American import guard Archie Goodwin (196-1994, college: Kentucky) scored 19 points. Five Capitanes and four Cariduros players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Capitanes have a solid four-game winning streak. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Cariduros at the other side keep the third place with 15 games lost. Cariduros will play next round against league's leader Vaqueros trying to get back on the winning streak. Capitanes will try to continue on its current victory against third ranked Piratas in Quebradillas. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was American guard Sheldon McClellan (196-1992, college: Miami, FL) who scored 35 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds. The other American import point guard Tremont Waters (180-1998, college: LSU) chipped in a double-double by scoring 31 points and 10 assists. The former international point guard JJ Barea (183-1984, college: Northeastern) chipped in 17 points and 8 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American forward Davon Jefferson (203-1986, college: USC) who recorded 25 points and 8 rebounds and the former international guard Jorge Pacheco-Ortiz (186-1998, college: Liberty) added 25 points and 6 assists respectively.
